Living the place : NICOLAS BOULARD ET LÉA BISMUTH

LIVING THE PLACE,
NICOLAS BOULARD ET LÉA BISMUTH, "SITUATIONS DE VALLÉES", MUSÉE BALZAC - CASTLE OF SACHÉ
With the support of Conseil départemental d’Indre-et-Loire

Gathered together by Anne-Laure Chamboissier, artistic curator, about ten artists were invited to live in places* in Touraine from spring to autumn 2021 following a creative residency. The theme "Living in the place" takes on its full meaning at a time when everyone is reviewing their lifestyles and the spaces that surround them. The artists renterrogate what constitutes these places, whether through the prism of their history, their architecture or their function. These works draw a new and sensitive cartography of the territory through their singular view of these places.

What is a situation setting in a given space? How can you follow in the footsteps of a Balzac, and should you do so? How does this resonate with any transformation process? For this exhibition at the Château de Saché, the artists wanted to answer these questions. The exhibition is divided into three parts: first, a curiosity cabinet welcomes the visitor with works inspired by Balzac’s texts, which are still alive. This is followed by a series of colour charts created from rainwater collected in the region, or from the writer’s black ink. The artists gradually progressed to what Balzac called the Theory of Gait, studying bodies in motion as well as the birth of a "new idea". The journey ends in the park barn with a performance in which the artists took up the 23km walk from the Gare de Tours to the Château de Saché that Balzac used to do on foot on his way to Touraine. This walk - on the margins of the landscape as well as on the blank page - initially a matrix walk, has now merged into a time travelling shot. A four-handed artist’s book, consisting of texts and photographs, is also being published for the exhibition.
